EVA alphabet


The EVA alphabet was created by René Zandbergen and Gabriel Landini and is composed of different types of characters
  1. Basic EVA characters which can be used to write the great majority of the manuscript. All basic EVA characters appear at least 10 times in the corpus of the manuscript.
  2. Extended EVA characters are a collection of weird forms, variations, embellishments that occasionally appear in the manuscript
  3. Punctuation characters are used to mark the layout of the text.
  4. Meta codes are used for extra-script coding.
The new EVA hand 1 font (link temporarily unavailable) contains all these and  a few extras including 2 unofficial EVA characters (borrowed from Jacques Guy's Frogguy alphabet), a few "doodles" (most probably embellishments) and the "Dee-like numerals" which resemble the pagination numbers. The idea of using a 'splat' symbol to mark unreadable '*' characters was introduced by Julie Porter.
 


 

The extended EVA characters are coded using the format &nnn; in which the nnn is the code number. Alternatively, for display purposes the character can be accessed with the ALT-codes (for example, under Windows, &131; is ALT 0131). Some locations are empty in the ASCII table as they are system reserved characters.
Note that many classical "weirdo" characters (those not represented in the Currier alphabet) can now be represented with basic EVA, while those that cannot are extended EVA. Bitrans tables will be availabe here shortly.

Connectivity in EVA

In some cases, one character is connected to the following one. In EVA there are 2 ways to denote connectivity:

  1. Character sequences in curved brackets ( ), with exception of the groups: ch, sh, cfh,ckh, cph, cth and character q which are always connected and no brackets are used.
  2. Capitalised characters.
Note that when using the EVA True Type font, the correct display of the connected characters can only be achieved with the capitalisation rule (introduced by Jacques Guy in his Frogguy alphabet). VTT (by R. Zandbergen) can be used for such conversion.

EVA supports capitalisation for adding connectivity to the right, from the top stroke of the character, with the following additional features:

q also connects to the right (q ) when not capitalised,

h (h) and H  (H) additionally connect to the left, and

E  connects from below (E) (e connecting from top is c)
